Acai has been used for many generations by the native tribes of the Amazon jungle in Brazil as a cure for various ailments. Acaí berry is a palm fruit that has a long thin trunk with a group of branches at the top that hang like ribbon leaves. Acai berries hang from the branches in clusters. The açaí berry only has a 24 hour life span in which the properties of the juice are still active. The natives must load the berries into baskets and onto boats soon after picking. They then must be transported by boat at night to reach the markets in Belem, Brazil.
It is not feasible for Acai Berries to be exported to the USA or other parts of the world because they would go bad before they could reach our local fruit markets.
A breakthrough in transporting the Acai Berries has been used by hidalgo foods. The process is called Freeze Drying. This is where Acai berries are picked and frozen and then re-hydrated for 24 hours.
